Top Ten Things You Should Have Never Stopped Doing

Remember the days when your dairy needs were met with chocolate milk, when listening to The Backstreet Boys on your discman was all it took to fall asleep, or when a bump in your pony tail was your biggest worry? Those were the days.

There are things I’m glad I don’t do anymore. Like obsess over what I’m wearing or worry about dividing fractions. Yet most childhood doings are things we wish we could get back. Here is my list of the Top Ten Things I never stopped doing because, well, we don’t need to.

Happy Tuesday.

1) Sleepovers

Sleepovers were quintessential in junior high, but they haven’t lost their value post-grad. In fact, gabbing with the girls in your pajamas at 2am is often the therapy you didn’t have the money to pay for. Also, it’s just fun.  This time, you’re allowed to have wine and all that talk about sex actually makes sense now.

2) Marco Polo…

…and other fun rec games like freeze tag and kick-the-can are not outdated. Have you played ultimate Frisbee lately? So fun. As an added bonus, all that running around is much more fun than the dreadmill.

3) Shopping With Mom

Remember when you needed underwear and socks and you went shopping with mom and she threw all those extra things in the cart? For some of us, those days aren’t over (me).  Shopping with Mom is like shopping with a 50% coupon, and now you aren’t embarrassed to be seen with her! Thanks Ma.

4) The Making of the Mixed Tape

We may not have cassette players anymore (or actually, some of us do in our pre-millenium vehicles)–but we do still have recordable CDs to work with. Grab a sharpie and make a mix for your next road-trip, or even better– make a love soundtrack for your Mr. or Mrs. Special. The making of the mixed tape is just as fun as listening. I still have the mixes I made back in high school and college, they are like mini time capsules! (I was so dramatic)

5) Back To School Supplies

Every September I get that familiar back-to-school pang, complete with deep yearnings for new pens, colored pencils, shiny folders, and the unnecessarily large trapper keeper (do they still have those?) Sometimes I still indulge. Forget Lisa Frank, grown up notebooks are just as cool. And new pens? They are always in style.

6) Makeovers

Break out that offensively large, bright purple Caboodle and slather on the fire engine red lipstick you’ve been keeping in there since the 90s. Invite your friends. Break out the crimper! Worth it.

7) Late Night Food Run

Remember when you were in college and it was okay to slide into a diner past 2am and order the so-bad-for-you-it’s-good pancake bonanza or hit up Taco Bell for a late night study break? Our metabolisms (and babies) may not allow it as frequently now, but it’s still okay once in a while. I suggest anything with syrup and whipped cream.

8) Passing Notes

I must have written thousands of notes in school. There’s a whole bag of them in the attic that I have since reread (again, so dramatic). We may not be sitting next to our best friends all day anymore, but snail mail is always fun. Use your new pens. Stickers, too.

9) Mini Concerts

If there’s anything you should have never stopped doing, it’s this. I never stopped. Did you? Grabbing the hairbrush and rocking out in your bedroom sans pants is probably the best way to start the day. This morning I gave Baby Baer a mini concert of “Oh Danny Boy” and Sara Evans’ hit “Suds In A Bucket.” He was moderately entertained.

10) Playing In The Sprinkler

Playing in the sprinkler is one of those things you say you’d never want to do again, but on a really hot day, with the right people, playing in the sprinkler is awesome. We may be adults now, but that doesn’t mean we have to be lame adults. Let loose.
