Morning Read

Waiting For Birdy, by Catherine Newman

You probably read this book five years ago. That’s fine. I’m one of those crazies who read The Da Vinci Code ten years after all the hype and was heartbroken when no one wanted to talk about it. I mean really, did you see that twist coming?? I did not.

Anyways, if you haven’t read Waiting For Birdy, you need to quit reading this blog and order it off Amazon right this minute. I laughed so hard I cried; the best parenting memoir since Operating Instructions. I should probably give credit to Elizabeth for recommending it in the first place. She said, “her writing reminds me of you.”

Fact: There is nothing more terrifying than reading the book you wanted to write.

Morning Allergies

More facts: There is nothing more dull than talking about allergies.

Which is why I made you this card.

I look like hay fever’s poster child. Which is disappointing as my allergies disappeared when I was pregnant and stayed disappeared until last week. Not cool. Any suggestions for what I can do while also breastfeeding besides getting knocked up again? Benedryl makes me sleepy.

Morning Thoughts

It has come to my attention that next week is the last week before my
Month Without Internet.

I am slightly panicked.

Lately I’ve been wondering if I should pre-schedule some posts or just go completely silent. Your thoughts?

Morning Nest

Waylon’s floor bed has recently been rated one of the hottest destinations in Pennsylvania.

We expect MTV’s Cribs to be here any second.

One Year Ago: The Talk

Have you seriously not watched it yet?

And finally, our Friday Funny from the Internets

Jimmy Fallon doing Downton
I could not stop laughing.

  1. What?!? A month without internet? There should totally be a warning label on your blog that says something to the extent of “don’t get attached, I’m going to be gone for a month.” I needed that warning!! Must prepare myself.

Also, I don’t have the quick easy answer for allergies, it’s not lovely, but I had the WORST pregnancy related allergies. Like totally couldn’t breath my face was distorted because of the swelling sinus pressure allergies. The ONLY thing to help was washing out my sinuses with saline wash and whole food based Vitamin C. It has to be whole food based, not just the emergen-c stuff. Also, try eating local honey. I’ve heard it works, and if it doesn’t, well honey is just plain good.

  2. I cannot watch the video right now. I’ll come back.

    and

Drew Jones came home from work and we were talking and he was like, “did you see the sleeping one of Motley Mama’s baby today?”

and I was like “YES WITH THE LITTLE OVERALLS I DIED.”

We are such creeps on your baby.

    I agree abut the overalls!

And I’ve heard the local honey thing too, but I’m not sure if it’s supposed to stop the symptoms once they’ve started. I always thought it was something you’re supposed to do through out the year as a preventative measure. Still, worth a shot!

    • Now I’m dreaming about what sort of goodness I could make with a pound of honey.

      • Natalie

Reading Meagan’s & Mandy’s comments reminded me how Daniel helps his allergies. He eats about 1/2tspn of local bee pollen each morning, and it is absolutely critical to keeping his allergies at bay. If he misses a day, they’ll knock him down full force, but will go away a day or two after he takes the next dose. I don’t know if local honey would have the same effect, but it’s worth a try and would make sense. I also know that one of his uncles (whom you know) who also has very bad allergies tried the bee pollen, and I don’t think it helped. So it’s probably very case sensitive. Good luck! Sounds awful!

Waiting for Birdy sounds good. Couldn’t endure the morning sob after having 4 little ones this morning :) Thanks for the reminder of “The Talk” – I died!!! laughing.

        • It’s my understanding that local (it has to be from your neighborhood) honey has the same effect as allergy shots: introduces the allergen a little at a time until your body gets used to it. I don’t know how long it takes to work.

My husband has allergies. He takes drugs (I guess you can’t – nursing?) and swears by his Neti pot. He also avoids bananas and chocolate. We keep the windows mostly closed in pollen season and I don’t put his clothes out on the washline.

I cannot stop laughing. Which has prompted me to go through your vault to make sure I didn’t miss any other Friday snacks (I’m desperate for giggles this morning).

I have not read The Da Vinci Code. Is it good? (I’m kidding. I’ve totally read it).

  5. Hannah

You were right.. a morning sob… whoa!
I needed this perspective this morning for sure… so thank you!
Also, about your month without internet… I will miss you!

  6. Re the internet: go cold turkey and take notes. I want to know all the gory details.

  7. cara

    A WHOLE MONTH??

  8. Gina R.

Thanks for the cry (not). Seriously, I could not handle that this early in the morning (I realize it’s not that early).

How will I go on for a whole month without these Friday snacks??!

  9. Viv

    Ordering off Amazon now!

  10. jamie

Loving little city radio’s lady mix!

  11. Morning sob.. totally. Reminded me of the sacrifices my mom made for my gymnastics and track meets. Driving 3 hours one way to watch me jump into a pit of sand 3 times and turn around and drive home? I love my mom. Best coach ever.

  12. Yeah, I just bawled like my 10 month old watching that video. Of course I am massively PMSing right now too :P I liked it a lot though!!

Um, I have not read The DaVinci Code. I have no desire really. But that book looks good.

For your month without internet…well, you could schedule posts ahead of time but do you really want to put that added pressure on yourself between now and next week? I will miss you reading your blog through the month of May but it will make June even better :) There is NO WAY I could go a month without internet. I think I’d make it like maybe 2 or 3 days before caving in. You are a brave, brave woman.

    • I had no desire to read the Da Vinci Code either. I started it out of desperation when I was stuck at the DMV. If you read it (do!), be ready to face a crowd of “Oh yeah, I think I read that ten years ago.”

Thanks for calling me brave. It doesn’t seem brave, but in the moment–I’m sure it very much will.

  13. Suz

i hope you don’t pay per text because you will be getting a lot more from me in may. (you’ll still text right?!)

  14. Molly

A month wo week ending snacks? Boo.

What are you planning to do with all your free time when not blogging or my favorite time suck: pinning?!?

  15. I had not see The Talk. Laughed and laughed (and then worried a little – my daughter is getting to this age. We had a “safe child” confab at our church recently. oh-my -lord-there-are-predators-everywhere was the takeaway message)

  16. A

Pre-schedule posts. Readers’ habits can be broken. Perhaps one post on a regular day each week would keep the intent of letting you breathe from the internet, while allowing your readers to look forward to it and keep up their fix. If you have the photo and text ahead of time, you could even let a trusted friend sign in and post it, with a note that you won’t be responding to comments til June.
